Backyard Composting Workshops Planned

The Penn State Master Gardeners of Wayne County and the Wayne County Recycling Center are offering free compost bins at a Backyard Composting Workshop on Saturday, May 9. Composting is nature's way of recycling organic materials such as leaves, grass clippings, twigs, and fruit and vegetable trimmings into a dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling soil called "black gold." Learn tricks of the trade and how to layer your composting for a "lasagna garden." Each family in attendance will receive a free EARTH MACHINE composter.

The workshop will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Wayne County Recycling Center, Route 652 between Indian Orchard and Beach Lake. Master Gardeners who are experienced composters will be leading the workshop. Pre-registration is required to reserve your compost bin.

This workshop will be repeated on Saturday, June 13 at the Damascus Community Center from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. To register for either workshop, call the Penn State Extension Office at 253-5970 ext 4110.
