Horse Owners School Planned

Penn State Extension in Wayne and Pike County will be holding an educational program for horse owners and others involved in the horse industry on consecutive Monday's from March 3 through April 7. Classes will be held at the PPL Lake Wallenpaupack Environmental Center from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM each night.

"The horse industry in and around Wayne and Pike county is evolving and expanding," according to David Messersmith, Extension Educator. "Our Horse Owners School is an effort to educate horse owners about a variety of topics and provides a forum for horse owners to exchange information with each other," says Messersmith.

During the four night program, participants will learn a variety of topics ranging from equine vaccination and basic veterinary care to buying quality hay for your horse and horse trailering basics. The program will conclude on April 7 with a barn visit to a newly constructed "greenhouse barn" that is being used for therapeutic riding. Whether you're a new horse owner, or an "old pro" you'll learn how to keep your horses healthy and happy and make ownership more enjoyable. During the course of the program you'll also have an opportunity to meet and interact with local horse owners and equine service providers. There will also be a number of opportunities for question and answer sessions with the workshop presenters.

The cost of the program is $25 per person which includes refreshments and course materials. Those attending all four sessions will receive a Penn State Certificate of Completion and recognition during the graduation ceremony on March 17. Learn More Before Signing a Gas Lease on Your Property

  • Lease rates in the northern tier of PA have ranged from $50 to $750 per acre for a five year lease.
  • Leases contain a lot of fine print with many unfamiliar terms. Seek legal advice before signing a lease.
  • You can negotiate many terms in a "standard" lease to make it more favorable to you the landowner.
  • Join or start a landowner group in your area to increase your leverage when negotiating a lease.
  • Never feel compelled to sign a lease when first approached.
